Веретеновидные змеи[1], или атрактусы[1] (лат. Atractus) — род змей семейства ужеобразных. Известно около 140 видов в Центральной и Южной Америке[2][3].

Описание

Этот род включает змей малого и среднего размера, ведущих скрытный образ жизни и питающихся дождевыми червями, членистоногими и моллюсками[4].

У представителей рода короткая нижняя челюсть, с 8—12 зубами; зубы верхней и нижней челюсти уменьшаются в размерах кзади. Шейный перехват не выражен. Глаз небольшой, с круглым или субэллиптическим зрачком. Ноздря находится между двумя носовыми чешуйками. Предглазничный щиток обычно отсутствует, и скуловой и предлобный щитки касаются глаза. Тело цилиндрическое. Спинные чешуи гладкие, без апикальных пор, в 15—17 рядов. Брюшные чешуи округлые. Хвост может быть как коротким, так и довольно длинным. Подхвостовые щитки парные[5].

Как правило имеют средний и мелкий размер, кроме нескольких исключений. Крупный вид Atractus gigas в длину превышает метр (общая длина взрослой самки голотипа 1040 мм), с оттенком бледных поперечных полос на спине на коричневом фоне. Это один из самых крупных Atractus, отличающийся цветовым рисунком и деталями щитка от нескольких других крупных сородичей, достигающих длины более 700 мм. Atractus gigas обитает на высоте 1900 м над уровнем моря на тихоокеанском склоне в Андах (Bosque Protector Río Guajalito, Пичинча, Эквадор)[6]. В Эквадоре найдены крупнейшие виды: Atractus touzeti (был описан в 2013 году, достигает почти 120 см в длину)[7] и Atractus atlas (был открыт в 2018 году; около 1 м)[8].
